Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed, Chairman Senate Standing Committee on Defence and Defence Production has said that a stable, peaceful and united Afghanistan is in the best interest of Pakistan, and Pakistan will continue to support all the initiatives of the international community aimed at ensuring regional peace and stability.
He was talking to a three member delegation of International Crisis Group headed by Ms. Louise Arbour, President of International Crisis Group who called on him at the Parliament House today. Regional issues and Pakistan’s democratic evolution came under discussion during the meeting with particular reference to the post- 2014 Afghan situation.
Chairman of the Senate Defence Committee said that the new realities would demand the regional players to focus on economic cooperation in different sectors particularly energy and economy. He further stated that Pakistan, being the key stakeholder, is positioning its self for the post-2014 situation. Senator Mushahid said that Pakistan has a free media, an independent judiciary, a democratically elected parliament and vibrant civil society and all are playing a key role in shaping policies. Senator Mushahid said that Pakistani society is progressive, open minded and has always demonstrated resilience to sail through crises smoothly.
Senator Mushahid further stated that the role of Parliament is expanding on areas of national security which is pre-requisite for promotion of good governance via parliamentary oversight.
Earlier, Ms. Louise Arbour President ICG informed Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed about the purpose of her visit and thanked him for the warm welcome at Parliament House. Special Secretary Senate Mr. Amjed Parvez was also present in the meeting.
