Senator Mushahid to Represent Pakistan at International Forum on China's Belt and Road Initiative in Austria

Islamabad, Aug.10: Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed, Chairman Parliamentary Committee on China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) will represent Pakistan at international forum on China’s Belt and Road Initiative(BRI) titled “BRIDGE for Cities - Belt and Road Initiative: Developing Green Economies for Cities” to be held in Vienna, Austria, from 26 to 28 September 2017.
The 2nd BRI Event, organized by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Finance Center for South-South Cooperation (FCSSC), is a large-scale platform aimed at advancing the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), says official statement of the organizers.

During the three-day event, leaders and experts from around the world will discuss ideas and solutions for building “Cities of Tomorrow: Technological Solutions and Holistic Approaches for Sustainable Cities”. The BRI Event aims to seek close international collaboration to form a green coalition to promote the sustainable development of the Belt and Road Initiative.

Officials from Government institutions and environmental organizations including China will elaborate how to ensure the Belt and Road initiative brings long-term and planet-friendly growth, clean and affordable transportation.

Stakeholder groups, investors, and entrepreneurs will bring valuable expertise on the forum such as sustainable finance, clean technologies to ecosystems, sustainable consumption and production and green economy policies.

China has become the global leader in mass production of solar panels, clean energy technologies as well as a growing export market. The country also owns the globalisation agenda, and has called on all parties that ratified the Paris climate agreement to implement it in full.

Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed an “international coalition for green development” during “Belt and Road Forum”, attend by 29 government leaders, in Beijing in May 2017.

To support the innovation agenda, President Xi said China will set up 50 joint laboratories, train 5,000 foreign scientists and fund 2,500 short-term research visits to China from abroad. Specifically on ecological and environmental protection, Xi also announced to establish “a big data service platform”.

Xi announced $900 billion infrastructure development under the vision of Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which was proposed by him in 2013. BRI refers to the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, aiming at building a trade and infrastructure network connecting Asia with Europe and Africa along the ancient trade routes of Silk Road.

CPEC is the flagship project of China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), and Senator Mushahid will present Pakistan’s efforts, experience and strategy to counter the environmental challenges during the development of CPEC.

UNIDO and FCSSC welcome participants from the public and private sectors, including municipal representatives, development finance institutions, domestic and international enterprises, international organizations, industry association, and experts from academia.
